The parish of St. George is under the omophorion of His Grace, the Right Reverend BASIL (Essey). His Grace was born and raised in Pennsylvania and attended seminary at St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary in Crestwood, NY, graduating in 1973. He was ordained to the holy priesthood on January 27th, 1980, elevated to the dignity of archimandrite on October 9th, 1988, and consecrated to the episcopacy on May 31st, 1992. During 1986 and 1987, His Grace resided at St. John of Damascus Institute of Theology in northern Lebanon where he studied, taught, and did translations for The Liturgikon. In January of 2003, His Grace received monastic tonsure to the Lesser Schema at St. John the Baptist Monastery in Essex, England. On December 15th, 2004, he was enthroned at St. George Cathedral in Wichita, Kansas, as the Bishop of  Wichita and the Diocese of Mid-America. The Very Reverend Philip Vreeland is the pastor emeritus at St. George. A native Nebraskan, Fr. Philip moved to Kearney in 1970 to accept a teaching position at Kearney State College. Prior to serving as the pastor of St. George, he was a longtime parishioner and also served as subdeacon and deacon. Fr. Philip was ordained to the holy priesthood on July 2nd, 1989, serving as the pastor of St. George until 1999. He served again as interim pastor in 2000. Fr. Philip was elevated to the dignity of archpriest on December 11th, 1999. A professional educator for over 30 years, he himself has numerous degrees and is also a graduate of St. Stephen’s Course of Study in Orthodox Theology. Although retired, Fr. Philip is quite busy, being called upon to serve various parishes and missions throughout the region.

The current pastor of St. George is the Reverend Christopher Morris. Fr. Christopher attended both St. Herman Theological Seminary and St. Tikhon’s Orthodox Theological Seminary, graduating from St. Tikhon’s in May 2006. Fr. Christopher’s home parish is All Saints Orthodox Church in Salina, Kansas. He was ordained to the holy priesthood by His Grace Bishop BASIL on February 18th, 2006. Fr. Christopher assumed pastoral duties at St. George on August 1st, 2006.
